Introduction:
Hair loss is a common side effect of cancer treatment, and as a two-time cancer survivor, I have faced the challenges of losing my hair head-on. In this blog, I want to share my journey of embracing hair loss and how it has impacted my life. On my social media platforms and in the comments section of my YouTube channel “What The ‘F’ with Sunny Larue,” I have been asked about my ever-changing wigs and the color choices. Today, I want to shed light on why I choose to embrace hair loss as a cancer survivor and refuse to let cancer define me.
Taking Control:
When faced with a situation as uncontrollable as cancer, it is essential to find ways to take back control. For years, I struggled with my cancer diagnosis, feeling like cancer had taken control over my body and spirit. But I made a conscious decision not to let it win. I refuse to let cancer define me and what I do with my life. Embracing hair loss became my way of reclaiming control in a situation that seemed uncontrollable.
The Grim Reality:
Receiving a cancer diagnosis is a grim experience. The fear of the unknown outcome looms over us. As time passed and I underwent treatments, I received news that most cancer patients aren’t fortunate enough to hear. However, amidst the positive news, my doctors warned me about the potential for hair loss, to the extent that it might not grow back to what it once was. This revelation was disheartening, but it sparked a change in my perspective.
Turning a Negative into a Positive:
Rather than letting hair loss consume me with sadness, I decided to turn it into a positive experience. Each day, I choose a wig that reflects my mood and energy. Feeling fierce? I rock vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows. Seeking tranquility? Blue and white become my go-to colors. And on days when I want to embrace my natural self, I let my head shine. By embracing the variety of wigs and colors, I am embracing who I am, both inside and out.
Empowering Self-Expression:
Hair loss can often lead to a loss of self-esteem and identity. But by embracing the aesthetic possibilities of wigs, I have found a way to express myself and feel empowered. Every wig I wear becomes an extension of my personality, allowing me to explore different styles and experiment with my appearance. It has become a form of self-expression that helps me reclaim my confidence and embrace my individuality.
Gratitude and Inspiration:
As my birthday approaches on March 17th, I can’t help but feel lucky to still be here, doing what I love, and sharing my life with all of you. I am grateful for the kind words and engaging conversations about cancer that I have had the privilege to be a part of. Sharing my journey has not only allowed me to find inspiration within myself but has also inspired others who may be going through similar experiences. Together, we can find strength and support in one another.
Conclusion:
Embracing hair loss as a cancer survivor has been a transformative experience for me. By choosing to have fun with wigs and colors, I have taken back control over a situation that initially seemed uncontrollable. It’s not just about the physical aspect of hair; it’s about embracing who we are, inside and out. Hair loss does not define us; it is merely a part of our journey. As we navigate the challenges of cancer, let us find ways to express ourselves, inspire others, and continue to embrace life with grace, strength, and resilience.
