Introduction:

Back in 2007, the internet felt like the digital Wild West. Social media was still in its awkward adolescence. YouTube was just getting started as a platform for sharing everything from skateboarding fails to music covers. Then, out of nowhere, something unforgettable happened: it rained “Chocolate Rain. ”If you were a youtube viewer back then, you’ll instantly recall the iconic video: a young, geeky guy in a plain white T-shirt and beige pants, black-rimmed glasses perched on his nose. He stands in front of a cheap mic and an old keyboard. Suddenly, he leans in, and a deep, thunderous voice fills the room: “Chocolate Rain. Some stay dry and others feel the pain” But what is “Chocolate Rain”? The truth is no one really knows! That’s the magic. Whether you’ve seen it, heard it, or just had the tune stuck in your head, you remember it. It’s catchy. It’s quirky. It’s a piece of pure internet history. This year marks the eighteenth anniversary as we look back and remember the phenomenon, the legend and the birth of going viral.

The Man Behind the Song: Who Is Tay Zonday?

So, who gave the world this unforgettable song? Tay Zonday. At the time, Tay was a 25-year-old graduate student, performing at open mic nights to small, supportive crowds. He was smart, a little nerdy, and always experimenting with music. Curious about this new thing called YouTube, Tay started uploading a few original songs, just to see what would happen. “Chocolate Rain” wasn’t even finished. Tay had the riff, but it took six weeks to craft the iconic lyrics. What did he want? Honest feedback from anyone who would listen. Back in those days, YouTube’s front page was still curated by real people. A staff member stumbled across Tay’s video and decided to feature it. That simple decision would change Tay’s life and the internet forever.

Going Viral: The Internet Discovers “Chocolate Rain”

Fun fact: “Chocolate Rain” wasn’t an instant hit. For months, it sat quietly, gathering just a handful of views. Then, three months after Tay posted it, something incredible happened. Someone submitted the video to Digg.com a site that was Reddit before Reddit existed. Suddenly, the internet couldn’t get enough. The video’s view count exploded. “Chocolate Rain” became more than a song. It became a meme. People everywhere were quoting it, remixing it, and parodying it. Some listeners debated its meaning. It was just a catchy tune that you couldn’t get out of your head. And we didn’t care too; the masses couldn’t get enough.  Eighteen years later, “Chocolate Rain” has been viewed over 141 million times. In 2008, it even won the YouTube Award for Best Music Video. Tay Zonday was officially a viral superstar.
